How Pregnancy Tests Detect Pregnancy
Pregnancy tests work by detecting the hormone hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) in your body. This hormone is produced shortly after a fertilized egg attaches to the uterine lining. As hCG levels rise, they can be detected in both blood and urine, making it possible to confirm a pregnancy.
When Should You Take a Pregnancy Test?
For the most accurate results, take a pregnancy test after you’ve missed your period. HCG levels are higher at this point, making it easier to detect a pregnancy. Testing too early can result in a false negative if hCG levels haven’t risen enough to be detected.
Additionally, taking a test first thing in the morning after several hours of rest can increase hCG concentration, making it easier to detect.
What If I’ve Already Taken a Home Pregnancy Test?
At-home pregnancy tests are reliable, but certain factors can impact the test’s accuracy giving you an inaccurate result. Even if you took a home pregnancy test, you need to have the results confirmed to be sure.
