What is Surgical Abortion and How Does it Work?
A surgical abortion can consist of a suction or D&C. A suction device is used to remove the embryo from the uterus through the vagina. [1]
D&C is a procedure that consists of dilating the cervix and scraping out the embryo and tissue out of the uterus. This procedure is performed at an abortion clinic, and you are sent home the same day. [2]

Do I Need an Ultrasound Before an Abortion?
Getting an ultrasound before an abortion is recommended because you will need to determine the gestational age of your pregnancy to know what type of abortion you need and verify your pregnancy.
An ultrasound can confirm if your pregnancy is viable (has not miscarried and is not ectopic).
